It has been a long and exciting journey, spanning three generations, which has seen the evolution of many new and unique ideas, from lowly grasses to exotic reeds, from handmade flowers to small scented pods all being incorporated into this business with ingenuity and creativity with the support of our vast network of dedicated suppliers from across India.

Minex saw its inception in 12 Chowringhee Road, with just a table, a chair and a passion to tap into India’s vast natural resources in medicinal herbs. Mr Agrawal and Mr.Bachawat built a supplier network to fill a growing niche in Europe and USA. The bestsellers were Vincarosea and Rawolfiaserpentina, plants that were native to India and used widely in conventional Ayurvedic medicine.

The pioneering spirit of Minex led to research in other indigenous herbs, potential buyers and emerging markets. Their bouquet of offerings grew to include Chiretta, Lycopodium Powder, and Tamarind Pulp. Storage, packaging and loading facilities were set up to match stringent buyer specifications. Minex bought its first warehouse in Janbazar and subsequently expanded operations in five locations around Kolkata.

A competitive edge

‘I can get this for you at a very cheap rate’ – Mr. Bachawat

 

On a vacation to Zurich, Mr. Bachawat spotted the humble lotus pod (kamalgatta) in a tiny florist store being sold at an exorbitant price. He had seen this item being served in his house as an edible delicacy. Sensing a business opportunity, he offered to supply it at a much lower price.“Sir you have a deal. Please get me 50,000 large lotus pods” and the dry flowers business had its first order!

 

Back in India he asked one of his Medicinal Herb suppliers to locate Lotus Pods. Seizing the chance to turn waste to wealth, the supplier sent a full truck load, with more than 200,000 pieces. The order to Zurich was shipped and a repeat order followed in a few months.

Zurich’s shipment led to contact with a big German buyer and an order for Sponge Mushroom along with Lotus pods. In this way more and more items were added to the basket….and the rest is history.
